Safety & Stability :Describing the level of safety/stability in Port-au-Prince is not an exact science. The political climate seems to have the greatest impact and the post election optimism surrounding Rene Preval has transformed Port-au-Prince into a much calmer city. Guests at WIGH are able to walk freely on the streets around the guest house. Driving to all areas of the city can now also be done safely. A school principal in Cite Soleil, the area previously known for its instability and Thus, from our perspective at the guest house, the situation for travel and safety in Port-au-Prince and Haiti is greatly improved. Mission and tourist groups are returning in increased numbers. In terms of the guest house itself, we continue to provide 24 hour armed guards to give additional peace of mind for our guests in our secure walled compound. (updated May 1, 2006) |
